Clear from the name, premenstrual syndrome or what is commonly called as PMS in medical science is a condition related to the menstrual cycles or periods of women. It is also referred to as PMT or premenstrual tension. It refers to a group of symptoms that may be related to the emotional and psychological aspect of women’s body. This condition may be accompanied by certain physical symptoms as well. It is most commonly found in women of reproducing age. PMS is a term that is used to refer to wide range of symptoms experienced by women before the onset of menstrual cycles. The symptoms may continue or disappear with the actual start of menstrual cycles. In some women, the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome may be experienced so severely that it may start affecting the normal or routine life of women. Mental stress, tension and depression are also known to trigger occurrence of PMS or premenstrual syndrome. Women who take unbalanced or unhealthy diet may also suffer from this condition due to deficiency of certain nutrients required for normal functions of the sexual and reproductive system. Unhealthy living conditions are also held responsible for causing PMS in some women. Complete lack of physical activity or inactive lifestyle has a major role to play in the occurrence of premenstrual syndrome in some cases.

Most commonly experienced signs and symptoms of premenstrual syndrome in most of the cases include-

  • Feeling of bloating or gaseousness in the stomach
  • Physical weakness, exhaustion, tiredness and laziness
  • Tenderness of the breasts
  • Abdominal pain and heaviness
  • Cramps in the legs
  • Irritable behaviour
  • Mood swings which means sudden change in the mood that can be extremely happy or sad at varying times
  • Cravings for certain foods
  • Constant and severe headache
  • State of intolerance towards lights, heat and noises
  • Lack or loss of sexual desire
  • State of confusion or forgetfulness
  • Decreased concentration
  • Decreased in the capacity of judgement and decision making
  • Disturbed sleep
  • Feeling of nausea and vomiting

Management of Premenstrual syndrome
In order to deal with stomach problems, you must drink plenty of water. It helps in reduction and prevention of fluid retention and bloating in the stomach.
Carry out light exercises regularly such as aerobic exercises, walking, jogging and swimming as all these help in management of abdominal pain.
You must avoid overeating as well as indigestible foods.
Have proper rest and sleep to normalize and optimize all sexual and reproductive functions.
