Miscarriage refers to the condition wherein women suffer from natural loss of a pregnancy from its outset to twenty weeks development, i.e. gestation. Miscarriage is much common and usually occurs between the seventh and twelfth weeks of pregnancy. The suffering women may not even know that they had been pregnant.

Many women may suffer from threatened miscarriage that does not actually occur but may be associated with vaginal bleeding. Incomplete abortion refers to the condition when fetal and placental tissues have been expelled but some of the products of conception remain within the uterus. Complete abortion is the condition when all the tissues have since been expelled. Missed abortion is the particular state of the fetus that has not developed but placental tissue exists in the uterus. Septic abortion refers to the condition when fetal and pregnancy material suffers from infection prior to and after the miscarriage.

Symptoms – Miscarriages usually result in light or heavy bleeding amongst the suffering women. They may experience cramps and abdominal pain. Fever and passing of tissue are also its signs. Women with these symptoms should contact the doctor for proper advice whether to resume work or go for treatment.

Causes – Several factors including genetic problems may be responsible for miscarriage. It may be because of prevention of usual development of the baby and its survival. Diabetic women and the ones affected with thyroid disease are more vulnerable to miscarriage. Viral infections may be responsible for miscarriage. It may occur because of excessive smoking. Excessive intake of alcohol may also trigger miscarriage that can attack because of trauma to the uterus. Exposure to radiation or previous miscarriage may also result in this disorder. Anatomical deformities of the uterus may also lead to miscarriage that can be caused due to illicit use of drugs. Risk of this problem can be increased due to NSAIDs taken around conception. Disordered immune system like lupus may also result in miscarriage that may be caused due to congenital heart disease.

Diagnosis and Treatment – Ladies supposed to be affected with miscarriage may be asked to undergo pelvic exam or ultrasound test. Many times a dilation and curettage (D&C) procedure becomes necessary to clear the uterus in full. Exams including genetic and blood tests may be required. Endometrial biopsy, hysteroscopy or laparoscopy may also be necessitated in certain cases of miscarriage.

Though prevention of miscarriage seems impossible, yet surgical treatments may be good to manage the problems related to women’s incompetent cervix. Usual pregnancies with normal birth of the babies are quite common amongst large numbers of women affected with miscarriage. It is not any sign of infertility. This is considered as an autoimmune response and women with miscarriages also become pregnant. The doctors may recommend progesterone, the hormone required for implantation in the uterus. The suffering women may be asked to wait for about three months before getting conceived again. Women should not be blamed for this problem. Pregnancy loss support groups provide proper counseling to the suffering women.
