Occurrence of repeated headaches apart from feelings of sickness and vomiting are the symptoms of migraine. Women are more prone to this problem as compared to their male counterparts. Few patients may suffer from migraine on rare occasions while others may be affected after frequent intervals or on recurrent basis. Persons that have aura are said to suffer from classic migraine while the migraine without aura is known as common migraine.

Symptoms – People having migraine with aura often experience light flashes, temporary vision loss, rotation of objects, shaking and boiling etc. This type of aura makes the patients to experience pins, numbness or needles that start in the hand and moves on to lips, arms, face and tongue etc. Leg may also be affected with this problem. Speech may also get affected due to this classic migraine. Odd smell and food cravings are also its signs. Common type of migraine may result in usual headache that occurs on one side of the head. Both sides and the entire head may also be affected due to headache. It may pulsate with head-movements, become worse and may continue for prolonged hours.
Feelings of nausea, vomiting, desire to stay in dark rooms, loss of concentration, hunger, stuffy nose, diarrhea, excessive urination, sweating, tenderness of scalp, feeling hot or cold and becoming pale are also the major symptoms of migraine.

Causes – Various factors may be behind migraine. Narrowing of blood vessels going into spasm in the brain may be responsible for this disease. Increased activity of certain chemicals in the brain may also be the major reasons of migraine that is caused due to confusing signals. Genetic factors may be behind this problem. Improper diets and poor eating habits may also be the culprits for migraine that can be caused due to tyramine, cheese, red wines, chocolates and citrus fruits etc. Eating in quick manners may also lead to migraine. Strong smells, smoking, flickering TV sets, VDU screens and glaring at lights may also result in this disease. Loud noises may also be the causes of migraine. People suffering from anxiety, depression, fatigue and stress etc may also be attacked with this disorder that can affect due to sleeping or contraceptive pills and hormone replacement therapy too. Menopause women may also fall victim to migraine.

Treatment – The doctor may recommend painkillers including aspirin or paracetamol that should be taken as soon as the symptoms start. Likewise ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac or tolfenamic acid may also give good results. Dissolvable painkillers are much effective as they get absorbed in quick manners. Anti-sickness medicines like domperidone and prochlorperazine also give good relief. Paramax® and MigraMax® are also recommended by the doctors. Triptan medicines including frovatriptan, almotriptan, rizatriptan, naratriptan, zolmitriptan, sumatriptan, or  eletriptan may be taken by the patients if other medicines do not work. Severity and occurrence of migraine can be prevented with these medicines to a great extent. Patients are advised to stay away from excessive alcohol and quit smoking. Rich diets with proper eating habits should be adopted.
