Kidneys, the most integral parts of our body help to remove the waste products from our blood. Many times, they lose their strength to do so and filtering of toxic and foreign substances becomes difficult. It results in deposits of waste products and blood’s chemical balance goes out of order. Such a condition is known as Kidney or Renal Failure. Usual problems in the kidneys may be got rid of easily but Acute Kidney Failure may require proper treatment.

Symptoms – There may be no signs of this disease in many cases. However, usual signs of kidney or renal failure include decreased quantity of urine and drowsiness. Patients may suffer from swelled anklets, legs or feet that happens because of fluid retention. Many persons affected with this problem may experience breathlessness too. Nausea, usual fatigue and confusion are also the symptoms of Kidney / Renal Failure. Pressure, chest pain, coma and seizures may also be the symptoms of this problem.

Causes – Any injury or direct damage to the kidneys may cause kidney renal failure. Slowing down of blood flow to the kidneys may also result in this disease. Blockage of ureters may result in kidney or renal failure. It results in hurdles in removing the waste through the kidneys. Failure of liver, heart problems or infection may also result in this problem. Deposits of cholesterol or blood clots may also be responsible for this disease that may occur due to lupus too. Multiple myeloma, scleroderma may also be behind kidney / renal failure. Cocaine, heavy metals and alcohol etc may also be the culprit behind kidney / renal failure. Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, the rare blood disorder may also be the reason for this disease to occur. Old age, diabetes, hypertension, kidney diseases and ostate cancer may also cause this disease.

Treatment – Proper treatment of kidney/renal failure is a must failing which it may lead to complications. Permanent failure of kidneys, buildup of fluid, weakness of muscles, chest pain or death may also occur if the patients do not get treated in time. The doctor may recommend urine / blood / image tests or measurement of urine output. Kidney biopsy may also be necessitated in certain cases.
Patients may be advised to take calcium, glucose or sodium polystyrene sulfonate to eliminate potassium deposits in the blood. Excessive potassium is too harmful. An infusion of calcium may be recommended for the persons that suffer from its deficiency. Hemodialysis may also become essential to remove toxins from the blood. It helps to get rid of excessive fluids from the body. Excess of potassium may also be removed with this process. The blood is pumped out of the body through dialyzer and returned back after filtration. Lack of fluids causing kidney failure can be made good with intravenous IV fluids. Swelling in the legs and arms because of excessive fluids may be managed with diuretics that help to expel their extra quantities. Proper diets with lower potassium foods are recommended by the doctors. Salty snacks & beverages and alcohol must be avoided by the patients.
