Heart is one of the most important or you can say chief functional unit of the body. It is because heart serves one of the most important functions for the entire body i.e. supply of nutrients and oxygen to the entire body along with blood. It helps in pumping pure blood to all the body parts so that these may keep on working normally and most optimally. But heart also suffers from certain diseases or disorders and ischemic heart disease or coronary artery disease is also one among these.

The supply of blood to the heart is affected adversely due to occurrence of this heart disease. It is mainly caused due to deposition of excess of cholesterol inside the inner walls of the arteries and the blood vessels which in turn results in difficulty in the passage of blood to the heart. Apart from blood supply, the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the heart is also affected. As a result of halted supply of oxygen, nutrients and blood to some area of the heart the concerned area of the heart suffers from its death and ultimately leads to heart attack. Even it has an adverse effect on other vital organs of the body. It is again due to reduced supply of blood and oxygen to them.

What causes Ischemic Heart Disease?

  • Ischemic heart disease is mainly caused due to high level of cholesterol in the blood vessels. And this condition arises due to intake of excessively oily, greasy, fried and indigestible foods. Additionally, some other factors may also be responsible for causing ischemic heart diseases as mentioned below.
  • Excessive smoking that results in constriction of the blood vessels and in turn reduces blood and oxygen supply to the heart.
  • Diabetes mellitus is also known to cause ischemic heart disease due to unavailability of enough energy required for heart functions.
  • People suffering from hypertension or high blood pressure are also at high risk of suffering from ischemic heart disease.
  • People who have family history of the disease are also prone to suffer from this condition. It is due to transfer of defective genes to the future generations.
  • Mental stress, tension, depression and anxiety may also be one of the chief reasons for occurrence of ischemic heart disease.
  • Lack of physical activity also invites ischemic heart disease. It is due to the reason that lack of physical activity results in slowing down the blood circulation which in turn reduces oxygen supply as well.
