As is clear from the name, irritable bowel syndrome is a condition related to the bowel or large intestine or colon. Under this condition, the working of the large intestine gets upset due to certain reasons or causative factors. This in turn causes great discomfort in the digestive system. Although irritable bowel syndrome or IBS is quite discomforting for the sufferer however it is not at all serious. It is triggered due to intake of some wrong foods or deskbound lifestyle. Additionally, some other habits of the sufferer may also be responsible for causing this condition.

  • Mental stress is another great factor that aggravates the signs and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Hormonal changes or imbalances in the body and especially those of women during or around menstrual periods are also known to increase the severity of the discomfort caused due to irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Additionally, infectious diarrhea or gastroenteritis and overgrowth of bacteria in the intestines may also be held responsible for causing irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Sensitivity of the digestive system towards lactose or gluten or both these may also result in irritable bowel syndrome.

Irritable bowel syndrome indicators

  • There are numerous signs and symptoms that may be found in a person suffering from irritable bowel syndrome. The signs and symptoms may vary from one person to the other depending upon the causative factors. The common symptoms include-
  • Pain in the abdomen
  • Bloating in the abdomen
  • Excessive formation of gas in the stomach
  • State of diarrhea or constipation
  • Presence of mucus in the stools
  • Weight loss in some cases
  • Rectal bleeding in case of severe cases of irritable bowel syndrome

Are there any risk factors for irritable bowel syndrome?
An apt answer to this question is yes. The chances of occurrence of irritable bowel syndrome increase considerably in some cases as mentioned below.

  • IBS occurs more in young people and especially those below 45 years of age.
  • Women are more prone to suffer from irritable bowel syndrome as compared to men. Women who face domestic abuse are more likely to suffer from irritable bowel syndrome.
  • People who have family history of the problem of IBS are more likely to suffer from this health condition as compared to others.
