Interstitial cystitis is a condition related to the urinary bladder. Due to the discomfort and pain associated with this health issue, it is also sometimes referred to as painful bladder syndrome or simply cystitis. It is a chronic condition related to the bladder under which there is too much pain in the bladder and in the pelvic region too. The range of pain may vary from mild to moderate to severe depending upon individual physical conditions. It is a well-known fact that urinary bladder performs the task of storing urine so that the same may be excreted out of the body when it is full via urination. And this task is performed by exchange of signals amid brain and the pelvic nerves.

Under the condition of interstitial cystitis, the signals that have to be exchanged amid nerves of urinary bladder and the brain get mixed up which in turn starts creating problems in the process of urination. As a result, the patient may experience frequent need to urinate but may be able to pass only little volume of urine. Although this condition is found in people of both the genders however women are more prone to suffer from this condition as compared to men. There are multiple signs and symptoms of interstitial cystitis that may appear differently in different people. The symptoms may vary in the same person periodically. The symptoms may aggravate due to stress and sexual activity.

What causes interstitial cystitis?
The major reason for occurrence of interstitial cystitis is inflammation of the bladder that results in pain and discomfort in the bladder. At the same time, the urine holding capacity of the urinary bladder is also reduced to great extent. Other causes of interstitial cystitis are as mentioned below.

  • People who don’t pass urine upon experience of pressure on the bladder and keep holding the same for long time inside the bladder are more prone to suffer from interstitial cystitis.
  • Any types of obstructions or blockages caused in any of the parts of urinary system may also lead to this condition.
  • Bacterial infections in the urinary bladder are also known to cause interstitial cystitis.
  • Some diseases or disorders relevant to the kidneys are also bound to cause problems in the urinary bladder and bladder syndrome or interstitial cystitis is also one among these.
  • Females who use diaphragm for the purpose of contraception are also prone to suffer from interstitial cystitis.
  • Change of the urinary catheter may also result in malfunctioning of the urinary bladder and causes interstitial cystitis.
  • People who get engaged in sexual activity excessively or frequently are also at high risk of suffering from this condition.

Indicators- Some of the common symptoms of interstitial cystitis are-

  • Constant and chronic pain in the pelvic region
  • Men suffer from pain amid scrotum and anus due to interstitial cystitis
  • Women suffer from pain in the pelvis or amid anus and vagina due to occurrence of interstitial cystitis
  • Passage of urine frequently but in small volumes all through day and night
  • Constant urge to urinate
  • Feeling of pain and discomfort in the bladder when it is full of urine and feeling of relief after it is emptied via urination
  • Experience of pain during sexual intercourse
