Cervical spondylitis or backache has now become common problem these days. It is all due to desk-bound lifestyle and lack of physical activity. At the same time, sitting or standing in same position for long time may also result in cervical spondylitis or backache. It results in stiffness of the muscles of the neck and back. The problem of cervical spondylitis is also called cervical myelopathy or cervical spondylotic myelopathy. Under this condition, the functions of the spinal cord are impaired and result in degenerative changes in the disc as well as joints present in the cervical spine or neck. Some nerves of the spinal cord get compressed due to which supply of blood and oxygen to the bones and muscles of the back and leg is halted. There is severe pain and inflammation in the muscles of back and neck. Even there is numbness in the legs due to backache which may even lead to difficulty in movement. If left untreated, the problem becomes worse and may even make a person completely bed-ridden.

What causes cervical spondylitis and backache?

There are multiple factors that are responsible for causing cervical spondylitis and backache as mentioned below.

Advancement in age that results in degenerative changes in the intervertebral discs is also one of the common factors for backache and neck pain. Due to deterioration in the bones and muscles in the vertebrae, there is pain and inflammation in the bones and muscles of the back and neck.

Enlargement of the facet joints or hypertrophy also causes neck pain.

Prolonged sitting in same position due to job or official work may also result in stiffness in the muscles of back and neck which in turn leads to the painful condition.

Compression of some nerves of back is one of the chief causes for occurrence of backache.

Dislocation of the vertebrae in the spinal disc is also responsible for severe back pain.

Leading a sedentary or completely inactive lifestyle is also one of the chief reasons for occurrence of cervical spondylitis or backache.

Obesity or condition of over-weightiness may also result in cervical spondylitis or backache. It is due to exertion of pressure on the lower back which in turn causes pain in the back.

Excessive lifting of heavy objects or bending or twisting excessively due to job, profession or some other reasons may also result in cervical spondylitis and backache.

Severe injury to the neck and back may also be an important cause of neck pain and back pain.
Slipped or herniated disc is also considered to be an important cause for backache or neck pain.

Symptoms of cervical spondylitis and backache

There are various signs and symptoms of cervical spondylitis and backache as mentioned below. The major symptoms are given below.

  • Severe and constant pain in the neck and back
  • Pain in the shoulders or over the shoulder blade
  • Spreading of pain from shoulders to the upper arm, forearm and the fingers
  • Aggravation of pain upon standing, sitting or while laying down, coughing, sneezing and laughing, bending of neck or walking minor or major distances
  • Weakness of muscles of the neck and back
  • Stiffness of the neck and back
  • Numbness in the hands, arms, shoulders or legs
  • Severe headaches and particularly at the back of the head due to neck pain
