Uneasiness caused in the stomach due to production of excess of hydrochloric acid is referred to as acidity in medical science. Various terms are used interchangeably to denote this digestive condition. Some of the common terms used to refer to acidity are acid reflux, hyperacidity, acid brash and heartburn. Although it is not a serious issue however it is quite discomforting. It makes a person completely restless and has an adverse effect on the overall health. It is because due to excessive production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, the functions of entire digestive system are disturbed which in turn results in loss of appetite.

The digestion of foods consumed by the body becomes quite difficult and the sufferer may have constant feelings of nausea and vomiting. Even constant pain and burning sensation is felt in the chest region. Under this condition, the excess of acid produced by the stomach starts moving back into the esophagus and hence results in bad taste, foul smell coming from the mouth as well as constant watering from the mouth. The sufferer also finds it difficult to swallow the foods consumed by him/her. There is pain in the stomach, heaviness in the abdomen and bloating.

Why people suffer from acidity?

Acidity is mainly caused due to wrong eating habits, improper lifestyle and other bad habits. The foremost and most common reason for frequent occurrence of acidity includes excessive dependence upon highly spicy, oily, greasy, indigestible and junk foods. All these result in indigestion which in turn upsets the stomach functions. Consequently, acidity is caused.

People who lead a sedentary or deskbound lifestyle are also prone to suffer from acidity. It is because lack of activity results in incomplete or improper digestion of foods. At the same time, blood flow to the stomach is also slowed down which in turn has adverse effects on the functions of the digestive system. Ultimately, all these factors lead to the condition called as acidity.
Additionally, intake of certain medicines, excessive smoking and alcohol consumption, mental stress, tension, depression, lack of proper rest and sleep, some digestive ailments, skipping of meals, and constipation may also be held responsible for causing acidity.

Symptoms- The most common symptoms of acidity include nausea, vomiting, heartburn, chest pain, abdominal pain and heaviness, belching, sour eructation, state of indigestion, blood vomiting or blood coming along with stools etc.
