Colitis is an inflammation and ulceration of the colon or the large intestine. It is a type of inflammatory bowel disease or IBD. It may occur slowly or all of a sudden. It may be accompanied by various symptoms such as fever, bloody diarrhea with mucus and cramps in the abdomen. Diarrhea caused due to colitis may lead to dehydration in the body. It is an autoimmune disorder. There are no certain or known causes for occurrence of colitis. Some home remedies work wonders as far as treatment and prevention of colitis is concerned.  

  • Papaya- It is one of the most excellent home remedies for treatment of colitis. If you are suffering from colitis, eat ripe papaya or have its juice.  It has a soothing effect on the abdomen.
  • Apple- Since apple is rich in phosphate and iron mineral therefore it is apt in the treatment of colitis. Boiled apple is best for colitis patients.
  • Buttermilk- Have buttermilk 3-4 times per day to get rid of symptoms associated with colitis. It is really beneficial for abdomen.
  • Coconut water-It is another health drink which may be used to treat colitis.  Drink fresh coconut water 4-5 times per day and feel the difference. 
  • Banana- This fruit is mostly liked by all. Bananas help in fast recovery from the diseased condition. Eating 2-3 ripe bananas each day helps in quick recovery from colitis.
  • Balanced diet- It plays an important role in treatment and recovery from colitis owing to the fact that colitis is a condition of the large intestine. Colitis patients should take a balanced diet including whole wheat grains, green leafy vegetables such as carrot, cabbage and fruits such as apple, banana and papaya. It helps in keeping colon in proper working order.
  • Rice- A mixture of rice, curd and banana may be consumed in easily digestible proportions 2-3 times in a day when a person suffers from colitis.
  • Juice diet- It is best to stick to juice day for a week or more in the beginning and then switch to balanced diet when a person is diagnosed for colitis.
  • Yoga and meditation- Although you may find it little difficult to carry our yoga or do meditation when you are suffering from colitis however it is quite beneficial as far as treatment and prevention of colitis is concerned.
  • Aloe Vera- It is a very beneficial ingredient which helps in providing relief from pain caused due to colitis. You may take half cup of aloe Vera juice in the morning and at bedtime. It helps in recovering from this condition quickly.
  • Ginger- It is the most commonly used ingredient in the treatment of abdominal problems such as colitis. It helps in providing great relief from diarrhea, vomiting and bloating.
  • Cayenne- It is also beneficial for the gastrointestinal tract. It helps in treating conditions such as cramping pains, stomach gas and pain in the stomach.

When you are suffering from colitis, you must avoid citrus fruits, sweets, junk foods, chocolates as well as hard and soft drinks.
